About the event:

A note from the Captains,

Originally conceived as a “A grand night out for pirates, buccaneers and nautical miscreants of all stripes!” The Swashbuckler’s Ball was first launched in November of 2010. The brainchild of Mark Axton (a.k.a. The Dread Pyrate Topknot) and Dan Clark (a.k.a. Ragnar “Redgoat” MacHaggis), the event was literally thrown together in a matter of weeks. The goal for the 2011 SwashBall was to raise funds for the Portland Pirate Festival, who had suffered Neptune’s wrath that year and was in a financial crisis.

So, Topknot and Redgoat decided, in true piratical fashion… why not create a fundraiser that’s also a party?

SwashBall was born.

The 2010 event saw a host of pirates, musicians and artists join together to raise money for a festival that was important to the ever-growing northwest pirate community. Chervona played the evening out and the crowds demanded a return for the next year. In 2011, SwashBall did indeed return and brought the likes of Pirates Charles and Critical Hit Burlesque to entertain the masses. The 2012 SwashBall booked a lineup featuring the legendary Celtic-rock band Tempest.

Last year, our fourth, we enjoyed the largest crowd and biggest SwashBall yet. With a musical lineup that included All the Apparatus, Coming Up Threes, Chervona and Seattle steampunk rockers Abney Park, the Ball rocked and the glorious piratical crowd danced until the wee late hours of the morning.

So here we are, plotting and scheming to bring about the 5th Annual Swashbuckler’s Ball! What’s in store for year five, you might ask? Firstly, we are bidding a fond farewell to our previous home at the Melody Ballroom and setting sail a new venue. The Melody has been a grand port for certain, but as SwashBall grows and changes, our venue needs have also changed. And bands? Oh my… we are working on a musical lineup that might be our best yet!

We’re incredibly excited about this year’s SwashBall, and we hope you’ll join us for Portland’s premiere pirate event. We’ll release details on this website as well as on our Facebook page as we have them. We’ve got some truly unique and amazing things in store for this year, and we’ve never been more proud about SwashBall. The support we continue to receive for this event is truly inspiring and humbling. We hope to raise our tankards with you on November 15th.

Fair winds and following seas,

Topknot & Redgoat
