We recently heard this story about the power of a song in a workshop at S.A.G.E (a rehabilitation program for survivors of commercial sexual exploitation). Program Director Kelli Doolittle witnessed a breakthrough for a young woman, with a history of substance abuse, who was totally disengaged, walking out of classes and therapy sessions.
One day during an MVM workshop, Kelli heard a beautiful, clear voice down the hall from her office. When she looked into the room, Kelli saw this resident standing in a circle with a group of other students, singing a solo from ‘Stand By Me’. This tiny moment (two verses long) was pivotal in this young woman’s life: she experienced what becomes possible when you focus and show up for something you care about. After that she started to attend school, engage in therapy and recognize her power to change her story. Two months later she transferred to a recovery program to tackle her substance abuse issues head on.
Our work is made up of moments like this, creating space for young people to find and share their voice. Whether it is a classic song, a bucket drum circle, or sharing a song of their own, the act of making music in community with others can be the light a young person in crisis needs.
Please stand by us and make a donation today. With your support, we will bring therapeutic music programs to 1,200 young people in crisis in 2020. We cannot do this important work without you.
