“This song, Butterfly, took me about 5 months to think of what to write. After about 4 and a half months, I had one verse, and I was going to give up. I called Christian (another MVM student and my best friend), and he chewed me out, for about 30 minutes. I hung up and sat to just think. I didn’t know how the HECK to finish this song. After an hour, I had the song finished…The next My Voice class, I got it recorded and done. I’ve never been so proud of myself.

This song was about a dream I had of my younger sister, Aurora, who passed away when I was 13. Ever since, I’ve had a recurring dream of her life, the way she might have grown up and how I took care of her. It was like God was rubbing it in my face that she wasn’t here. This song talks about the pain my whole family feels, how hard it’s been for all of us since she left, and what my dream showed about her life. It took a long time for my parents to smile again. It’s felt like a million years. In the song, I call her, “Little One”. In the 9 months she was here, that’s all I called her. It was my own little nickname. I called the song, “Butterfly” because, well, I say it often in the song but also because, in the dream, there was always a butterfly chasing her as she ran down the road. It’s hard singing this song without tears but, somehow, my little one gives me the strength.” – Alyssa

Listen to another song written by Alyssa off the My Voice Music 2012 Student Compilation Album.  It is called, Charles Song.
